Morelab and Next Mobility Solutions participated in the 17th International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing & Ambient Intelligence (UCAmI 2025)

Oihane Gómez-Carmona and Erik Eguskiza-Aranda participated in the 17th International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing and Ambient ‪Intelligence UCAmI 2024, held in Florence, Italy, in November 2025. The UCAmI Conference focuses on Ambient Intelligence (AmI), a field that promotes user-centred computing environments and systems aimed at seamlessly integrating information technologies into everyday devices and activities.

There, Oihane and Erik presented the achievements and ongoing work of the NextEdge project, developed in collaboration with Next Mobility Solutions and its CEO Dr. Javier Goikoetxea Gonzalez. This initiative aims to build an intelligent co-pilot for connected mobility by combining hybrid Edge-Cloud processing with advanced AI techniques. Their contributions showcased progress toward systems capable of anticipating mobility needs, supporting safer and more efficient mobility decisions, and generating adaptive, AI-driven user insights.

On the one hand, Oihane Gómez presented the work “Towards Adaptive and Personalized Co-Pilot Systems: Design Principles for Context-Aware Driver Assistance”, which introduces a set of foundational design principles for next-generation driver-assistance copilots. Her contribution focuses on how adaptive and personalized systems can leverage contextual information to enhance user experience, improve safety, and support real-time decision-making. The work emphasizes the importance of tailoring assistance to individual drivers and situational factors, paving the way for more intelligent, transparent, and human-centered in-vehicle support technologies.

On the other hand, Erik Eguskiza presented the work “From Rules to Representations: Improving Event Classification with Transformers to Infer Mobility Needs”, which investigates how machine learning and transformer-based language models can infer whether calendar events require physical transportation from their textual descriptions. His contribution examines a hybrid dataset generation strategy combining real and synthetic events, evaluates multiple classification approaches, including traditional ML models and DistilBERT, and demonstrates the advantages of contextual language models in identifying implicit mobility needs. The study provides a scalable methodology for mobility-aware intelligent assistants, enabling applications such as automated route planning and smart agenda management.

This work has been funded by the Ministry of Industry and Tourism through the PERTE VEC II as PROYECTO ITAM for NEXT MOBILITY SOLUTIONS under the “expediente VE2-010000-2023-75.

MORElab members Diego López-de-Ipiña and Oihane Gómez-Carmona participated in the 16th International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing and Ambient ‪Intelligence UCAmI 2024, held in Belfast, United Kingdom, from November 27th to December 29sd 2022.

The focus of the UCAmI Conference is Ambient Intelligence (AmI) which represents a new generation of user-centered computing environments and systems to find new ways to obtain a better integration of the information technology in everyday life devices and activities.

Diego López-de-Ipiña presented the work “Towards the Democratization of Citizen Science Campaigns for Air Quality Assessment”, that explores the SOCIO-BEE initiative, which aims to empower citizens through democratized air quality monitoring, employing a multi-role co-creation methodology involving diverse community roles and tools to encourage engagement, data collection, and behavioral change.

Oihane Gómez-Carmona presented “Tailoring Digital Middleware for Rural Needs: Insights from User Feedback Analysis” that emphasizes user feedback and user-centered design to overcome barriers and enhance usability in middleware technologies like the one proposed by the AURORAL project for digitalizing rural areas.

The H2020 AURORAL project represented in the 16th International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing and Ambient Intelligence (UCAmI)

The H2020 AURORAL project was represented at the 16th International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing and Ambient Intelligence (UCAmI) held in Belfast, UK, from November 27th to November 29th, 2024. The UCAmI Conference focuses on advancing Ambient Intelligence (AmI) technologies and applications, emphasizing environmental sensing, processing, and integration to improve quality of life, particularly in domains such as healthcare, Ambient Assisted Living (AAL), and smart environments.

Oihane Gómez-Carmona participated in the European Week of Regions and Cities in the context of the H2020 AURORAL project

Oihane Gómez-Carmona from the University of Deusto has participated in the European Week of Regions and Cities in the context of the H2020 AURORAL project. The AURORAL project made a significant impact at the event, held in Brussels from October 7th to 10th, 2024, through participatory sessions such as "Creating an Inclusive Digital Transformation: Unlocking the Potential of Smart Rural Ecosystems." This session emphasized the unique challenges rural areas face in accessing services, proposing digitalization as a critical solution. AURORAL, Alongside EU projects dRural and HealthChain, highlighted cutting-edge solutions for strengthening rural ecosystems and promoting sustainable development.

Another focal point of AURORAL’s involvement was the workshop "Fostering Rural Regeneration through Local Talent: A Skill Set for the Smart Communities' Workforce.". This session shared best practices for building European smart communities through innovative EU initiatives and partnerships designed to enhance rural skills and promote regional regeneration.

Beyond these sessions, Oihane was engaged in strategic meetings with the project team to make progress in the AURORAL’s objectives through discussions on the ongoing open call procedure and the project’s future sustainability. She attended meetings focused on the Smart Tomorrow platform, which aims to support the project's legacy and facilitate continued development beyond its official timeline.

Oihane Gómez Carmona participated in the “The 48th IEEE International Conference on Computers, Software, and Applications” (COMPSAC 2024) held in Osaka (Japan) from July 2nd to 4th, 2024. The main focus of the flagship IEEE conference this year was “Digital Development for a Better Future.”

COMPSAC 2024 brought together global researchers, developers, practitioners, and policymakers to explore the latest advances in computing technologies and their potential integration across society. Attendees discussed challenges and opportunities in various fields, including computer architectures, learning technologies, data sciences, human and social computing, IoT, smart health, and security in computing, aligning with the conference’s dedication to fostering digital development that benefits society.

She presented the paper "Employee Perceptions of Privacy and Data Control in Workplace Wellness e- Health Programs " authored by herself, Diego Casado-Mansilla, Diego López-de-Ipiña and Javier García-Zubia.

DEUSTO organises the AURORAL General Meeting

On October 25th and 26th, the University of Deusto hosted the second in-presence General Meeting for the H2020 AURORAL project. The assembly brought together over 25 European consortium partners, showcasing the University’s ongoing commitment to societal betterment—particularly in reducing the digital divide in rural regions and fostering their advancement.

This AURORAL General Meeting served as a pivotal juncture in the project’s progress, fostering a collaborative environment for more than 50 participants. During two full days, this encounter facilitated productive dialogues, knowledge exchange, and strategic planning, all aimed at addressing the project towards its ambitious objectives for the future.

The AURORAL project is dedicated to enhancing connectivity and establishing a digital ecosystem of smart objects and interoperable service platforms, aiming to stimulate dynamic rural ecosystems and promote innovation, applications, and services. With the goal of driving economic growth, addressing societal challenges, and narrowing the digital divide between urban and rural areas, AURORAL focuses on maximising the potential of rural regions through increased connectivity and digitization. The project showcases its digital environment via cost-effective, flexible cross-domain applications in large-scale pilots across seven European regions.

The University of Deusto has participated in the EU GREEN WEEK within the context of the H2020 AURORAL Project

Our researchers Oihane Gómez-Carmona and Morelva Saeteros from the University of Deusto have participated in the EU GREEN WEEK 2023 events organised by the H2020 AURORAL project. These events held in Brussels on June 6th and 7th, 2023, were focused on the importance of skills in the digital era and their role in promoting accessible, inclusive, and sustainable innovation. Hence, discussions dealt with empowering citizens and regions in order to participate and co-develop smart systems, tools, and services aligned with the concept of Smart Learning Communities.

In this direction, the event also featured the presentation and discussion of the AURORAL Academy, which promotes cooperation among capacity-building providers to foster enabling skills. As members of the AURORAL project, Oihane and Morelva took part in debates on ensuring accessible innovation and breaking down socio-cultural barriers to education, discussing cutting-edge approaches to digital skills development and new ways to enable citizens to become digital "prosumers", capable of participating in the green and digital transition.

MORElab members Diego López-de-Ipiña, Maite Puerta-Beldarrain and Oihane Gómez-Carmona participated in the 14th International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing and Ambient ‪Intelligence UCAmI 2022, held in Cordoba, Spain, from November 30th to December 2sd 2022.

Diego López-de-Ipiña presented the work “Fostering Multi-stakeholder Collaboration Through Co-production and Rewarding”, while Puerta-Beldarrain presented “Human-AI Collaboration to Promote Trust, Engagement and Adaptation in the Process of Pro-environmental and Health Behaviour Change”. Finally, Oihane Gómez-Carmona presented “Modulating Users’ Involvement in Interactive Machine Learning Solutions: A Model Cascade Strategy”

Additionally, Diego participated in the IoT Special session located within the Conference program, where he had the opportunity to talk about human-centric IoT and introduce MORElab's research interests in this direction to the rest of the attendance.

Oihane Gómez-Carmona participated in the “ACM International Conference on Information Technology for Social Good (GoodIT 2022)”

Oihane Gómez Carmona participated in the “ACM International Conference on Information Technology for Social Good" (GoodIT2022:) held in Limassol (Cyprus) from September 7th to 9th, 2022.

The main focus of the GoodIT conference is the application of IT technologies to social good, in which social good is about global citizens uniting to unlock the potential of individuals, technology, and collaboration to create positive societal impact.

She presented the paper "The Street as a Reflective Space to Increase Citizen Awareness of
Social Justice in the Fashion Industry" authored by Eduardo Rodríguez-Barbará, herself, Airí Ferrer, Braulio Gómez-Fortes, Szilard A. Kados, Diego López-de-Ipiña and Diego Casado-Mansilla.

Patient enrollment started for the BD4QoL clinical trial

The “Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza” hospital (S. Giovanni Rotondo, Italy) started the enrolment of the patients who participate in the prospective trial for the use of the BD4QoL platform starting from April 11th, 2022. The first 18 patients are using the BD4QoL apps to collect quality of life data and will be followed up for 24 months. Patients will report their perceived quality of life using the web-based standard questionnaires from the European Organization for the Research on Cancer (EORTC) at the enrolment and every six months as part of their follow-up visits. Two thirds of the study participants will also collect data on their physical and social activities, sleep, and emotional status by using the BD4QoL mobile apps.

The University of Deusto participated in the F2F Meeting between Pilot sites and Tech partners in the context of the H2020 AURORAL Project

The MORElab member Oihane Gómez-Carmona, as part of the H2020 AURORAL project Deusto team, participated in the “F2F Meeting between Pilot sites and Tech partners” organised on the 9th of June in Vienna (Austria) and online. This meeting was born as an initiative to communicate the significance and value of both Middleware and cross-cutting applications provided by the AURORAL solution.

This event gathered together technical partners and pilots to discuss the scope of the crosscutting services provided in the context of AURORAL and reached initial agreements regarding functionalities and additional needs to be managed by the services. Besides, each technical Work Package (WP) presented the state of the art of their activities in the context of the pilot involvement for the clarification of efforts as well as the intended outputs for the following phases of the project.

In this respect, being the University of Deusto leader of WP3 at the AURORAL project, Oihane has actively participated in the different sessions allocated during the meeting. She has shared the progress of WP3 enabling the pilot sites to talk about, prepare and agree on the primary inputs needed to finish the WP and deliverables for the balance of the project.

MORElab participated in the European Regions for Smart Communities Summit, first face-to face meeting of the H2020 AURORAL Project

MORElab members Diego Casado-Mansilla and Oihane Gómez-Carmona, together with Edurne Iñigo Alday (Deusto DBS) and María Ortiz-Coronado (Deusto IRPO) as part of the H2020 AURORAL’s project Deusto team, participated in the “European Regions for Smart Communities” summit, organised between 9th and 13th of May, in Évora (Alentejo, Portugal) and online.

This event gathered together AURORAL partners, local and regional leaders, members of the European Parliament and the European Commission to discuss and share challenges and innovative solutions to promote smarter communities through digital transformation.

As part of the AURORAL project, they actively participated both as speakers and as members of the Scientific Committee in several sessions, workshops and dialogues where their experiences and perspectives from the AURORAL project on how to promote a sustainable rural development supported by an ecosystem of developers, service providers, and user communities were shared.

MORElab participated in the Fashion Revolution initiative

In April 2022, MORElab members Diego Casado-Mansilla, Oihane Gómez Carmona, and Diego López de Ipiña contributed to Fashion Revolution week, an initiative to make visible the consequences of Fast Fashion and raise awareness of the problem in the textile industry.

Particularly, within the context of a TFG carried out by the student Eduardo Rodriguez, MORElab has participated in designing and developing a T-shirt vending machine augmented with technology, which attracted citizens with its slogan T-shirt 1 €. For those interested in buying the t-shirt, the machine reproduced a video showing informing the working conditions, work environment and low wages some workers have in the textile industry.

On Saturday, April 30, this machine was placed on the main street of Bilbao, allowing pedestrians promenading the streets to approach and interact with it.

During this experiment, statistics on acceptance and decision-making on whether or not to buy a T-shirt for 1€ were collected to study the adequacy of interactive solutions to show us social realities invisible in our day-to-day lives.

The EU-funded BD4QoL project aims to improve HNC survivors’ quality of life by developing a person-centred monitoring and follow-up plan. It will use artificial intelligence and Big Data collected from mobile devices, in combination with multi-source clinical and socioeconomic data and patients’ reported outcomes. Analysis of the quality of life indicators collected over time will facilitate early detection of risks, prevent long-term effects of treatment, and inform patients and caregivers for personalised interventions.

The University of Deusto represented AURORAL in the Inter-OSS workshop within the IoT Conference 2021

In November, the researcher Diego Casado Mansilla from the University of Deusto and the MORELab Research group took part in the 2021 Interoperability and Open Source Solutions Workshop (Inter-OSS 2021) introducing the AURORAL project.

This workshop, event co-located with the 11th International Conference on the Internet of Things (IoT 2021), focuses on providing a forum for exchanging experiences, best practices, and ideas to build the know-how around the ongoing unsolved issues and gaps around the topics on interoperability, architectural principles, and standardisation efforts. Professor Casado presented the talk entitled “AURORAL: Boosting the interoperability of isolated data and services in rural areas across Europe'' disseminating the AURORAL proposal to bring the interoperability gap of smart object platforms and to improve the digitalisation within rural areas.

Besides having the opportunity to spread the commitment of AURORAL to overcoming the digital division between rural and urban areas, this workshop also provoked an open discussion for scientific progress, industrial standards evaluation and showcase practical experiences.

Oihane Gómez Carmona, new Doctor in MORElab

On September 23th, 2021, MORElab's member Oihane Gómez-Carmona has been honored with the PhD recognition. Her dissertation, entitled "Promoting the Perception of Emerging Technologies in Work Environments through Edge Computing and Hybrid Intelligence” was advised by Dr. Javier García Zubia and Dr. Diego Casado Mansilla.

NET4Age-Friendly recognised by the United Nations as a good practice

SHAFE / NET4Age-Friendly recognised by the United Nations as a good practice

The United Nations launched an Open call for good practices, success stories and lessons learned by all stakeholders in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda.

More than 700 submissions were reviewed by a team of experts from United Nations entities and “SHAFE implemented through NET4Age-Friendly” was one of the recognized good practices from all over the world.

SHAFE and NET4Age-Friendly are international networks that engage all levels of society with the intrinsic aim of promoting the development of local, regional or national inclusive ecosystems (composed of a quadruple helix of citizens, public authorities, companies, and researchers) which interact and coordinate at the international level. This strategy allows them to literally become viral, by exponentially increasing the networking, the dissemination and knowledge exchange among scientists, business, public, local administrations, policy makers, professionals, and citizens. This brings an inspiring and fruitful new way of cooperation that fosters knowledge and promote grassroot implementation at a broader scale, combining top-down and bottom-up perspectives.

The meaning and notion of SHAFE as a holistic approach that promotes the alignment of policies and strategies is a unique roadmap for the implementation in and across Europe. When we acknowledge the serious challenges, especially those related to demographic change and the COVID-19 pandemic, it is not possible anymore to still work in silos or to keep positions for individual interest. Before any other role, we all are citizens and we have a duty as to work together in a bid for a better world. COVID has not directly impacted the implementation of SHAFE, au contraire, the inclusive environments proposed by NET4Age-Friendly would be adequate solutions to minimise the effects of the pandemic and relieve the pressure on health and care systems.

Participation on the AI4Good Digital Workshop

As part of the events organized by the SHAPE-ID project, MORElab members Aitor Almeida and Aritz Bilbao took part in the AI4Good Digital Workshop. They presented the AI contributions that are being done by the BD4QoL project in order to improve the prediction and modelling of health-related quality of life in head and neck cancer survivors.

The following discussion with both stakeholders (clinicans and patients) and researchers helped us to better understand the need of interdisciplinary cooperation between the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (AHSS) and STEM (Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and other disciplines.

The next generation of the Internet is expected to interconnect and to make heterogeneous and smart objects interoperable in order to realize the Internet of Things (IoT). It aims to diffuse smart and pervasive environments able to offer innovative services in heterogeneous applicative scenarios, such as environmental monitoring, building automation, healthcare, smart cities, smart grids, logistics, and tourism. The combination among emerging wireless communication technologies, cloud-based software architecture, embedded systems, and artificial intelligence systems based on machine learning or deep learning, promises to carry out the digital transformation anywhere.

Kick-off of REACH H2020 incubator for data-fuelled solutions, where MORElab leads Incubation Process

MORElab takes part in kick-off of "REACH Incubator: Next Generation Data Incubator to drive growth in the European startup data sphere", on 15th and 16th September 2020.

The REACH project, an initiative born out of the successful efforts of EDI – European Data Incubator, and European Commission’s Horizon 2020, aims to accelerate data-driven innovation in Europe, towards the vision of the Common European Data Space and European Data Market.

REACH will establish an innovation support mechanism and a multi-stakeholder ecosystem that will facilitate the experimentation of secured and trusted data-fuelled solutions which utilize proprietary, often multi-stakeholder, industrial and personal data. REACH will go beyond EDI, not only by connecting data corporations with European innovators, but also by engaging Digital Innovation Hubs in the conception of high potential data value-chains and value-added services.

REACH is an incubation programme, run by 10 core partners and 9 data providers. The highly versatile and experienced consortium will put to use their knowledge, networks and key assets to facilitate the development of 100+ data-driven business ideas. It will create a fertile ground for startups and SMEs to solve real-life challenges of large corporations, by providing the following benefits:

Due to Covid-19, REACH will take all the precautionary safety measures and implement its incubation services online, whenever on-site meeting and trainings are not allowed.

MORElab members are awarded by Atlas-Elsevier for their research

Aiming at promoting the social impact of science, the recognised publishing house Elsevier grants monthly the Atlas Awards, a distinction that highlights academic works with high social impact among all the articles of the more than 2,500 magazines of the publishing house. These awards are selected by a prestigious advisory committee, which includes members of Berkeley (Centre for Effective Global Action), United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) and United Nations University among others. In February 2020, the article entitled "User perspectives in the design of interactive everyday objects for sustainable behaviour", whose authors are Ane Irizar-Arrieta, Diego Casado-Mansilla, Aiur Retegi, Pablo Garaizar and Diego López de Ipiña, researchers and teachers at the University of Deusto, has been selected with this distinction within the category of Sustainable Development Objective 12, evidencing the scientific excellence of the team and its line of research in the social and economic field.

In the mentioned article, persuasive technologies are analysed and explored as mediators to improve energy efficiency and pro-environmental attitudes of workers in tertiary buildings (it refers to buildings in the service or administrative sector). As a starting point, the paper describes a one-year study among subjects in which participants interact with a smart coffee machine under three different experimental conditions. With the results of this study, a new theory is generated to guide the design and development of people-centred interactive systems to improve sustainable behaviours. This new theory is applied in the conceptualisation and implementation of a new physical interactive device, incorporating specific ideas and solutions from different and complementary perspectives.

Markel Iglesias-Urkia defends his PhD

On June 26th, 2020, Markel Iglesias Urkia has been honored with the PhD recognition, with Cum Laude, International and Industrial mentions. His dissertation, entitled "Boosting the adoption of Industry 4.0 through Internet of Things, industrial standards and software engineering" was advised by Dr. Aitor Urbieta from Ikerlan and Dr. Diego Casado-Mansilla from MORElab.

Aritz Bilbao, new doctor in MORElab

On June 23rd, 2020, MORElab's member Aritz Bilbao Jayo has been honored with the PhD recognition. His dissertation, entitled "From Political Manifestos to Social Networks: the automation of Political Discourse Analysis using Contextual Information" was advised by Dr. Aitor Almeida.

Kick-off meeting of the BD4QoL project

Aitor Almeida and Aritz Bilbao assisted to the kick-off meeting of the Big Data Models and Intelligent tools for Quality of Life monitoring and participatory empowerment of head and neck cancer survivors (BD4QoL) project in Milan the 30th and 31st of January. The University of Deusto is one of the 13 partners of the project.

The number of treatment options available for head and neck cancer (HNC) has increased in the last decade thanks to advanced technologies. While current post-treatment care plans focus on functional and health conditions, there are socioeconomic determinants of quality of life that also need to be addressed. The EU-funded BD4QoL project aims to improve HNC survivors’ quality of life by developing a person-centred monitoring and follow-up plan. It will use artificial intelligence and Big Data collected from mobile devices, in combination with multi-source clinical and socioeconomic data and patients’ reported outcomes. Analysis of the quality of life indicators collected over time will facilitate early detection of risks, prevent long-term effects of treatment, and inform patients and caregivers for personalised interventions.

Participation in the "Human Right to Health and New technologies: Challenges and opportunities" workshop

In the framework of the EMA/#GCEurope, Aitor Almeida presented the MORElab experiences regarding the use of Big Data in the Health domain. He presented the work done in the City4Age and BD4QoL project and the challenges mantaining the users' privacy

DEUSTEK organized the 9th International Conference on the Internet of Things (IoT 2019)

From 22 From 22 to 25 October the University of Deusto held the 9th International Conference on the Internet of Things (IoT 2019). This Conference, which builds on the success of its predecessors since 2008, is the premier forum to share, discuss and witness cutting edge research in all areas of development for the Internet of Things.

The Conference included original, high impact research papers which have been reviewed and selected based on technical novelty, the integrity of the analysis and social-environmental impacts and practical relevance, on topics related to the development and adoption of the Internet of Things. Moreover the program included three keynote speakers: Alexandra Deschamps-Sonsino, one of the most influential people in IoT, who talked about "The Illusion of the Smart House", Andy Stanford-Clark, chief technology officer of IBM in the United Kingdom and Ireland, on "Innovation starts at home." and Benoît Piranda, from the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté University, Institut FEMTO-ST, CNRS ( France).

MORElab members Diego Casado-Mansilla and Oihane Gómez-Carmona presented their work at the conference. Diego presented the paper entitled User Involvement Matters: The Side-Effects of Automated Smart Objects in Pro-environmental Behaviour authored by himself, Pablo Garainzar and Diego López-de-Ipiña.

Oihane presented the work "Simplicity is Best: Addressing the Computational Cost of Machine Learning Classifiers in Constrained Edge Devices" authored by herself, Diego Casado-Mansilla, Javier García-Zubia and Diego López-de-Ipiña. Moreover, this paper was awarded an honourable mention.
