MORElab members Diego López-de-Ipiña and Oihane Gómez-Carmona participated in the 16th International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing and Ambient ‪Intelligence UCAmI 2024, held in Belfast, United Kingdom, from November 27th to December 29sd 2022.

The focus of the UCAmI Conference is Ambient Intelligence (AmI) which represents a new generation of user-centered computing environments and systems to find new ways to obtain a better integration of the information technology in everyday life devices and activities.

Diego López-de-Ipiña presented the work “Towards the Democratization of Citizen Science Campaigns for Air Quality Assessment”, that explores the SOCIO-BEE initiative, which aims to empower citizens through democratized air quality monitoring, employing a multi-role co-creation methodology involving diverse community roles and tools to encourage engagement, data collection, and behavioral change.

Oihane Gómez-Carmona presented “Tailoring Digital Middleware for Rural Needs: Insights from User Feedback Analysis” that emphasizes user feedback and user-centered design to overcome barriers and enhance usability in middleware technologies like the one proposed by the AURORAL project for digitalizing rural areas.

The H2020 AURORAL project represented in the 16th International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing and Ambient Intelligence (UCAmI)

The H2020 AURORAL project was represented at the 16th International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing and Ambient Intelligence (UCAmI) held in Belfast, UK, from November 27th to November 29th, 2024. The UCAmI Conference focuses on advancing Ambient Intelligence (AmI) technologies and applications, emphasizing environmental sensing, processing, and integration to improve quality of life, particularly in domains such as healthcare, Ambient Assisted Living (AAL), and smart environments.

Oihane Gómez Carmona presented there the paper “Tailoring Digital Middleware for Rural Needs: Insights from User Feedback Analysis” authored by herself, David Buján-Carballal, Diego Casado-Mansilla, and Diego López-de-Ipiña. This work, part of the Internet of Everything track, examines the challenges with middleware technologies like AURORAL for digitalizing rural areas, emphasizing user feedback and user-centered design to overcome barriers and enhance usability, ultimately fostering inclusive and sustainable rural digital transformation.

Oihane Gómez Carmona participated in the “The 48th IEEE International Conference on Computers, Software, and Applications” (COMPSAC 2024) held in Osaka (Japan) from July 2nd to 4th, 2024. The main focus of the flagship IEEE conference this year was “Digital Development for a Better Future.”

COMPSAC 2024 brought together global researchers, developers, practitioners, and policymakers to explore the latest advances in computing technologies and their potential integration across society. Attendees discussed challenges and opportunities in various fields, including computer architectures, learning technologies, data sciences, human and social computing, IoT, smart health, and security in computing, aligning with the conference’s dedication to fostering digital development that benefits society.

She presented the paper "Employee Perceptions of Privacy and Data Control in Workplace Wellness e- Health Programs " authored by herself, Diego Casado-Mansilla, Diego López-de-Ipiña and Javier García-Zubia.

DEUSTO organises the AURORAL General Meeting

On October 25th and 26th, the University of Deusto hosted the second in-presence General Meeting for the H2020 AURORAL project. The assembly brought together over 25 European consortium partners, showcasing the University’s ongoing commitment to societal betterment—particularly in reducing the digital divide in rural regions and fostering their advancement.

This AURORAL General Meeting served as a pivotal juncture in the project’s progress, fostering a collaborative environment for more than 50 participants. During two full days, this encounter facilitated productive dialogues, knowledge exchange, and strategic planning, all aimed at addressing the project towards its ambitious objectives for the future.

The AURORAL project is dedicated to enhancing connectivity and establishing a digital ecosystem of smart objects and interoperable service platforms, aiming to stimulate dynamic rural ecosystems and promote innovation, applications, and services. With the goal of driving economic growth, addressing societal challenges, and narrowing the digital divide between urban and rural areas, AURORAL focuses on maximising the potential of rural regions through increased connectivity and digitization. The project showcases its digital environment via cost-effective, flexible cross-domain applications in large-scale pilots across seven European regions.

MORElab members Diego López-de-Ipiña, Maite Puerta-Beldarrain and Oihane Gómez-Carmona participated in the 14th International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing and Ambient ‪Intelligence UCAmI 2022, held in Cordoba, Spain, from November 30th to December 2sd 2022.

Diego López-de-Ipiña presented the work “Fostering Multi-stakeholder Collaboration Through Co-production and Rewarding”, while Puerta-Beldarrain presented “Human-AI Collaboration to Promote Trust, Engagement and Adaptation in the Process of Pro-environmental and Health Behaviour Change”. Finally, Oihane Gómez-Carmona presented “Modulating Users’ Involvement in Interactive Machine Learning Solutions: A Model Cascade Strategy”

Additionally, Diego participated in the IoT Special session located within the Conference program, where he had the opportunity to talk about human-centric IoT and introduce MORElab's research interests in this direction to the rest of the attendance.

Oihane Gómez-Carmona participated in the “ACM International Conference on Information Technology for Social Good (GoodIT 2022)”

Oihane Gómez Carmona participated in the “ACM International Conference on Information Technology for Social Good" (GoodIT2022:) held in Limassol (Cyprus) from September 7th to 9th, 2022.

The main focus of the GoodIT conference is the application of IT technologies to social good, in which social good is about global citizens uniting to unlock the potential of individuals, technology, and collaboration to create positive societal impact.

She presented the paper "The Street as a Reflective Space to Increase Citizen Awareness of
Social Justice in the Fashion Industry" authored by Eduardo Rodríguez-Barbará, herself, Airí Ferrer, Braulio Gómez-Fortes, Szilard A. Kados, Diego López-de-Ipiña and Diego Casado-Mansilla.

MORElab participated in the Fashion Revolution initiative

In April 2022, MORElab members Diego Casado-Mansilla, Oihane Gómez Carmona, and Diego López de Ipiña contributed to Fashion Revolution week, an initiative to make visible the consequences of Fast Fashion and raise awareness of the problem in the textile industry.

Particularly, within the context of a TFG carried out by the student Eduardo Rodriguez, MORElab has participated in designing and developing a T-shirt vending machine augmented with technology, which attracted citizens with its slogan T-shirt 1 €. For those interested in buying the t-shirt, the machine reproduced a video showing informing the working conditions, work environment and low wages some workers have in the textile industry.

On Saturday, April 30, this machine was placed on the main street of Bilbao, allowing pedestrians promenading the streets to approach and interact with it.

During this experiment, statistics on acceptance and decision-making on whether or not to buy a T-shirt for 1€ were collected to study the adequacy of interactive solutions to show us social realities invisible in our day-to-day lives.

The University of Deusto represented AURORAL in the Inter-OSS workshop within the IoT Conference 2021

In November, the researcher Diego Casado Mansilla from the University of Deusto and the MORELab Research group took part in the 2021 Interoperability and Open Source Solutions Workshop (Inter-OSS 2021) introducing the AURORAL project.

This workshop, event co-located with the 11th International Conference on the Internet of Things (IoT 2021), focuses on providing a forum for exchanging experiences, best practices, and ideas to build the know-how around the ongoing unsolved issues and gaps around the topics on interoperability, architectural principles, and standardisation efforts. Professor Casado presented the talk entitled “AURORAL: Boosting the interoperability of isolated data and services in rural areas across Europe'' disseminating the AURORAL proposal to bring the interoperability gap of smart object platforms and to improve the digitalisation within rural areas.

Besides having the opportunity to spread the commitment of AURORAL to overcoming the digital division between rural and urban areas, this workshop also provoked an open discussion for scientific progress, industrial standards evaluation and showcase practical experiences.

Kick-off of REACH H2020 incubator for data-fuelled solutions, where MORElab leads Incubation Process

MORElab takes part in kick-off of "REACH Incubator: Next Generation Data Incubator to drive growth in the European startup data sphere", on 15th and 16th September 2020.

The REACH project, an initiative born out of the successful efforts of EDI – European Data Incubator, and European Commission’s Horizon 2020, aims to accelerate data-driven innovation in Europe, towards the vision of the Common European Data Space and European Data Market.

REACH will establish an innovation support mechanism and a multi-stakeholder ecosystem that will facilitate the experimentation of secured and trusted data-fuelled solutions which utilize proprietary, often multi-stakeholder, industrial and personal data. REACH will go beyond EDI, not only by connecting data corporations with European innovators, but also by engaging Digital Innovation Hubs in the conception of high potential data value-chains and value-added services.

REACH is an incubation programme, run by 10 core partners and 9 data providers. The highly versatile and experienced consortium will put to use their knowledge, networks and key assets to facilitate the development of 100+ data-driven business ideas. It will create a fertile ground for startups and SMEs to solve real-life challenges of large corporations, by providing the following benefits:

MORElab members are awarded by Atlas-Elsevier for their research

Aiming at promoting the social impact of science, the recognised publishing house Elsevier grants monthly the Atlas Awards, a distinction that highlights academic works with high social impact among all the articles of the more than 2,500 magazines of the publishing house. These awards are selected by a prestigious advisory committee, which includes members of Berkeley (Centre for Effective Global Action), United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) and United Nations University among others. In February 2020, the article entitled "User perspectives in the design of interactive everyday objects for sustainable behaviour", whose authors are Ane Irizar-Arrieta, Diego Casado-Mansilla, Aiur Retegi, Pablo Garaizar and Diego López de Ipiña, researchers and teachers at the University of Deusto, has been selected with this distinction within the category of Sustainable Development Objective 12, evidencing the scientific excellence of the team and its line of research in the social and economic field.

In the mentioned article, persuasive technologies are analysed and explored as mediators to improve energy efficiency and pro-environmental attitudes of workers in tertiary buildings (it refers to buildings in the service or administrative sector). As a starting point, the paper describes a one-year study among subjects in which participants interact with a smart coffee machine under three different experimental conditions. With the results of this study, a new theory is generated to guide the design and development of people-centred interactive systems to improve sustainable behaviours. This new theory is applied in the conceptualisation and implementation of a new physical interactive device, incorporating specific ideas and solutions from different and complementary perspectives.

DEUSTEK organized the 9th International Conference on the Internet of Things (IoT 2019)

From 22 From 22 to 25 October the University of Deusto held the 9th International Conference on the Internet of Things (IoT 2019). This Conference, which builds on the success of its predecessors since 2008, is the premier forum to share, discuss and witness cutting edge research in all areas of development for the Internet of Things.

The Conference included original, high impact research papers which have been reviewed and selected based on technical novelty, the integrity of the analysis and social-environmental impacts and practical relevance, on topics related to the development and adoption of the Internet of Things. Moreover the program included three keynote speakers: Alexandra Deschamps-Sonsino, one of the most influential people in IoT, who talked about "The Illusion of the Smart House", Andy Stanford-Clark, chief technology officer of IBM in the United Kingdom and Ireland, on "Innovation starts at home." and Benoît Piranda, from the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté University, Institut FEMTO-ST, CNRS ( France).

MORElab members Diego Casado-Mansilla and Oihane Gómez-Carmona presented their work at the conference. Diego presented the paper entitled User Involvement Matters: The Side-Effects of Automated Smart Objects in Pro-environmental Behaviour authored by himself, Pablo Garainzar and Diego López-de-Ipiña.

Oihane presented the work "Simplicity is Best: Addressing the Computational Cost of Machine Learning Classifiers in Constrained Edge Devices" authored by herself, Diego Casado-Mansilla, Javier García-Zubia and Diego López-de-Ipiña. Moreover, this paper was awarded an honourable mention.

DeustoTech received the Basque Goverment Grant for the Acquisition of Scientific Equipment

DeustoTech has received the Basque Goverment Grant for the acquisition of scientific equipment. This grant will allow us to improve our computing center by adding a GPU server for the training of deep learning models. This new server will let us improve our scientific production, being able to train more complex models.

The rise of wearable/embodied technologies and personal area networks has successfully bridged the physical and digital worlds.

The Internet of People (IoP) represents the mapping of individuals and their interactions with smart devices to the Internet. It focuses on data collection, modelling, and ubiquitous intelligence for a wide range of applications. IoP has quickly emerged as an important interdisciplinary field encompassing social networks, IoT, HCI, bio-inspired algorithms and behavioral and social sciences.

There are many research challenges, including: discovering what ubiquitously-sensed information users are willing to share in social networks and to make social networks more engaging and interactive for users; deciding which interactions may benefit from context information gathered on social networks; determining the potential risks of sharing data in pervasive social contexts; and developing new technologies to support interactions with ever-changing conﬁgurations of distributed devices, applications, users and interfaces.

Themes

In this theme issue, we seek to advance our knowledge about the interplay between social networks and ubiquitous computing.

We welcome original contributions including application, methodological, technological, and review papers.

Special attention will be given to papers that address application contexts and scenarios for smart cities including the management of crisis scenarios, participatory sensing, government and city planning.

Alongside papers submitted as a result of this CFP, the issue will also contain extended papers from the 5th IEEE International Conference on Internet of People (IoP 2019) and the 9th International Conference on the Internet of Things (IoT 2019).

The rise of wearable/embodied technologies and personal/body area networks has successfully bridged our personal physical and cyber worlds in recent years. Interactions between human users and their personal mobile devices push toward an Internet where the human user becomes more central than ever (evolving from consumers of information to prosumers), and where their personal devices become their proxies in the cyber world, in addition to acting as a fundamental tool to sense the physical world (what is also called as citizen science or participatory sensing). Internet of People (IoP) is a new Internet paradigm where humans and their personal devices are not seen merely as end users of applications, but become active elements of the Internet. It represents the mapping of social individuals and their interactions with smart devices to the Internet. It focuses on data collection, modelling, analysis and ubiquitous intelligence for a wide range of applications of crowd sourced, Internet-based personal information.

Likewise, the emerging social and sentiment analysis computing, behaviour modelling and novel human/environment interaction mechanisms, e.g. brain, audible or augmented or mixed reality computing, will allow further incorporation of the social and mental worlds into the so-called Hyper World. Due to the pervasiveness of IoP and its impacts on human activity, it has quickly emerged as an important interdisciplinary field which encompasses IoT, HCI, bio-inspired algorithms with behavioural and social sciences.

In essence, IoP promotes the idea that a Smart World is only possible if there is a better and smarter collaboration bridging machine intelligence and human intelligence, between devices and people, where technology (AI in particular) is applied from a human-centric and driven standpoint, i.e. following the Internet of People paradigm.

This special issue is then focused on cutting edge research from academia, industry and practitioners, with emphasis on original, novel, innovative and impact-oriented research providing insights into Smarter Hyper-Connected Societies' needs, processes, services and frameworks using the Internet of People paradigm. An area of particular interest in this Special Issue is to consider how Collective Intelligence can meet Machine Intelligence in order to give place to more user-centric and driven intelligence to enable Intelligent Environments where Humans and Internet-connected devices cooperate and influence their behaviour in order to promote autonomous life, better energy sustainability, healthier environments or inclusive environments.

Specifically, this issue welcomes three categories of papers: (1) high quality and significantly extended papers from the 13^th International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing and Ambient Intelligence (UCAml 2-5 December, 2019) whose motto is "user-centered computing environments and systems" and from the ACM 9th IoT Conference (IoT 22-25 October, 2019); (2) invited articles from qualified experts; and (3) contributed papers from this open call with address any of the following list of topics.

DeustoTech [1] is a private non-profit institution of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Deusto for applied research in new technologies. Since 2005 DeustoTech mission is to support the ICT activity in business and society through research, the development of technologies, innovation and knowledge transfer. We focus our activity around TRLs 2-7 and articulate it into four applied fields: Industry, Mobility, Energy and Environment and Societal Challenges, having a fifth, the Chair of Applied Mathematics, as a transversal activity and support for the previous four. We are characterized for working with data of heterogeneous nature, throughout its life cycle and in compliance with ethical principles and humanists who define the University of Deusto. In this project the Societal Challenges [2] groups is involved through the DEUSTEK Basque University System. Societal Challenges research unit has a strong background in humanizing, i.e. giving place to human-centric and human-driven, application of Data Science, IoT and Human Interaction technologies. That includes, sustainable awareness rising through IoT, empowering the citizen towards participating in the city daily decisions and governance, or engaging employees towards promoting healthy or sustainable habits in the workplace avoiding attrition of campaigns. CANDIDATES PROFILE

The candidate would be integrated in a highly multidisciplinary research group. As such it is of utter importance the communication skills and their ability to understand the different perspectives that the research topic has. DESCRIPTION OF THE HOSTING OFFER

This position will explore the potential of smart solutions and environments grounded on the extensive usage of data and analytics through the collaboration of machines and humans. It faces the challenge of how to make sense out of data, progressing from data into knowledge, through the collaboration of people & machines. A Data Scientist is sought with expertise on Hybrid Intelligence (HI), which is an approach for combining human and machine intelligence for decision making and data interpretation. HI benefits from the human ability to express and deal with complexities and the automation, availability and accuracy that machines provide. The interception of the following areas to give place to Smart Environments will be explored: • Machine Learning: ML methods can be used for activity recognition performed to detect what a user is doing, e.g. walking or resting. ML can also be used to correlate user actions into activities that configure behaviours. • Human Computation: is about involving citizens to annotate the world or correct/validate inferences performed by machines, gamification can be used to improve and validate the results driven by machines. • Knowledge modelling & exploitation: human and machine-driven knowledge can be effectively merged and represented in a Knowledge Graph (KG), combining data gathered from machine learning and human contributions. KGs are exploited to infer new knowledge or build recommenders through transparent and interpretable algorithms

MORElab participated in Zientzia azoka and Ecodesign panel

During the month of May 2019, MORElab members of GreenSoul H2020 project participated in two relevant outreach events in Bilbao. On the one side, we showcased in "Zientzia azoka" some of the interactive gadgets we have created to promote energy awareness at workplace. For this purpose, we brought conversational agents and we discussed with visitors the impact that these smart objects as assistive technology.

On the other side, we were invited to give a talk in a panel related to circular economy and eco-design in the context of Forotech (Univ. of Deusto). In this talk, we explained the ideation, design and development of the Interactive Coaster, an smart object devised to increase motivation of employees to engage with energy consumption at workplace.

On Thursday 11th April 2019, Dr. López de Ipiña was named "Corresponding Member" of JAKIUNDE in event organized at the Spanish Open University campus (UNED) in Araba, Vitoria-Gasteiz.

Diego López de Ipiña González de Artaza is a Associate Professor at the School of Engineering, accredited by the ANECA as a Full Professor, a Lead Researcher for the “MORElab – Envisioning Future Internet” group (http://www.morelab.deusto.es/), and acts as director of the DeustoTech-Societal Challenges Unit associated with the DeustoTech – Deusto Institute of Technology (http://www.deustotech.eu), University of Deusto.

He obtained his doctorate from the University of Cambridge (UK) in 2002 with a thesis entitled “Visual Sensing and Middleware Support for Sentient Computing”. His main areas of research are: pervasive computation, the Internet of Things, Semantic Web, middleware adaptive semantics, Linked Open Data, social data mining, modelling, and semantic reasoning with support for ambiguity, and interaction mediated through mobile devices and tangible interaction between the user and their environment.

He has overseen 15 doctoral theses, and more than 100 final undergraduate degree projects and Master's theses. He works, or has worked, on various coordinated European (EDI, GREENSOUL, SIMPATICO, CITY4AGE, WELIVE, MOVESMART, IES CITIES, SONOPA, GO-LAB, MUGGES, CBDP, LifeWear) and national (THOFU, mIO!, ADAPTA, SABESS, PIRAmIDE, ACROSS) research projects, including three non-oriented fundamental research projects (SentientThings, TALIS+ENGINE, and FRASEware), mostly as lead researcher, for the University of Deusto, addressing the adoption of mobile computing, Semantic Web, social data mining, open-source data, social robotics, and the Web 2.0 (and beyond) for domains such as Urban Computing, Sustainable Computing, Open Government, and Ambient Assisted Living.

He has authored more than 100 publications, presented at relevant international conferences and in journals, on topics of Ubiquitous Computing, Semantic Web, Middleware, and Aml. He has more than 140 entries on the Web of Knowledge database.

ESTIA met MORElab in DeustoTech premises

On 27th of February 2019, three members of ESTIA Institute of Technology came to DeustoTech to meet Societal Challenges and Energy & Environment members who are working in H2020 GreenSoul and Retos I+D+ì SentientThings projects. The contact was made because of the shared research interest on sustainability, HCI and persuasive technology.

The meeting was fruitful and we expect future collaborations between ESTIA and DeustoTech in the future.

TP-Link partners with us to deploy Smart Plugs

Deusto and TP-Link have collaboratively joined forces to deploy and install smart plugs (HS110) in the different pilot buildings of GeeenSoul project (Austria, Spain, UK and Greece) to measure the power consumption of the employee's workstations.

Assistance and participation in the IoT Week & Global IoT Summit 2018

From the 4th to the 8th of June Bilbao had the pleasure of being the host for the 2018 edition fo the IoT Week & Global IoT Summit. This congress gathers together the community of stakeholders engaged in developing new Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and presents cutting-edge scientific articles on IoT innovations and latest research results.

Three researchers of the group attended this event: Diego López-de-Ipiña, Diego Casado-Mansilla and Oihane Gómez-Carmona. Moreover, Diego Casado-Mansilla participated on the main track of the conference and presented the work “Design-insights for devising persuasive IoT devices for sustainability in the workplace” authored by himself, Ane Irizar-Arrieta, Pablo Garaizar and Diego López-de-Ipiña.

8th GreenSoul plenary meeting in Seville

From 24th to 26th of April of 2018 the GreenSoul partners went to Seville to celebrate the 8th project plenary meeting. This event was organized by the project leader, Wellness Smart Cities. The main objective of the plenary was to advance on the deployment of sensing technology on the different pilots across Europe: UK, Spain, Greece, and Austria. Furthermore, collaborations among dissemination leaders CleanTech and CERES with each of the pilot managers were established to foster participation and engagement of end-users. The first piloting phase will start soon in July, so everything has to be put in place to successfully initiate the individual treatments. We hope that these two months will provide fruitful collaborations for making the project a success. As the DEUSTO team is very concerned with the environmental issues such as pollution, they decide to offset some CO2 emissions by riding everyday to the meeting place from their hotel. Next meeting will be organized by CERTH in Thessaloniki (Greece) in September.

€5 Million Fund for Big Data startups and SMEs – European Data Incubator is open for applications

European Data Incubator (EDI) is a Big Data incubator offering a dedicated acceleration programme and €5M funding for EU based startups and teams.

EDI is looking for Big Data innovators and entrepreneurs from all over Europe to solve real industry challenges provided by various EU corporates and data providers across a wide range of sectors (from Smart Cities, Energy & Environment, to Internet & Media, Industry 4.0 and Retail sectors), or to develop independent data solutions utilizing the available datasets.

EDI’s offer is a great opportunity for entrepreneurs. Selected startups will have access to a free Cloud environment for scalable data processing, data from major European organisations, free business services to boost their growth, a network of data specialists, and up to €100,000 equity free funding.

The EDI incubation process consists of 3 incubation phases: EXPLORE → EXPERIMENT → EVOLVE, where continuous technical, business and funding support is provided to the startups qualifying for the different phases.

HOPU's Smart POI solution installed in MORElab premises

Smart POI solution is composed by an IoT device called Smart Spot that offers a disruptive approach to transform relevant Points of Interest in a city such as historical places, open air museums, etc. into Points of Interaction (POIs); making them more liveable and intelligent. For this purpose, Smart POI offers a context-driven solutions that engage with visitors offering accessible and agile experiences via a proximity-based interaction with technologies such as Physical web / iBeacon which are being adopted and widely available in our smart phone; thereby Smart POI enables a direct interaction between the Points of Interest (i.e. infrastructure) with smart phones (i.e. people) without requiring any native Application or complex interaction. At the same time, Smart Spot device collects quantitative and qualitative data to build the metrics that allow to monitor the impact from tourism in terms of noise pollution, air quality (NO2, SO2, O3, CO, H2S), ambient impact (temperature, humidity and lighting) and safety via crowd-monitoring (counting people in an area via WiFi). These metrics provide the knowledge baseline and awareness to develop strategic plans towards more sustainable, respectful and integrated tourism; including transversal actions in mobility, urbanism, entertainment, public health / wellness and safety.

One instance of this solution has been installed and deployed in a building close to the research laboratory. The group will use all the sensor data gathered by the POI to internal projects such as GreenSoul. We hope that this collaboration between HOPU and MORElab will provide fruitful results in research and innovation.

The 7th meeting of H2020 GreenSoul project in Bilbao

Last 15th and 16th of January the University of Deusto held the 7th plenary meeting of the H2020 GreenSoul project. The meeting was conceived to anchor the final pilot plan from a research perspective. Thus, we decided to create a randomized block design within each pilot where different blocks (sub-set of employees) will be subjected to different experimental treatment related to GreenSoul-ed Things, persuasion principles and automation through the DSS.

The meeting was a success and all the partners agreed on the new pilot plan. The next challenge for the project will be to put in practice the research plan and to have the best of the results expected from the project. The next plenary meeting will be in Seville where we will evaluate the current status of the deployment to be carried out.

Foodbar project receives IBM Shared University Research (SUR) Award

The foodbar project has received the Shared University Research (SUR) Award from IBM. This award consists of monetary, cloud and equipment support to promote research and innovation in strategic areas of mutual interest between IBM and the awarded institutions.

DeustoTech-Internet has developed a first prototype of foodbar in a joint collaboration with Symbiolab and the support of IBM. The aim of the project is to create a social network around the basque miniature cuisine. To that end, the latest mobile, cloud and cognitive technologies have been used.

Oihane Gómez Carmona participated in the “2nd International Multidisciplinary Conference on Computer and Energy Science” (Splitech 2017) held in Split (Croatia) from July 12th to 14th, 2017.

The main focus of the Splitech 2017 conference was Smart Cities, E-Health and IoT, including a Symposium on RFID & EMBEDDED SYSTEMS FOR INTERNET OF THINGS.

She presented three MORElab member's articles:

DeustoTech organises the 5th Plenary Meeting for the GreenSoul Project

MORElab members together with DeustoTech-ENERGY colleagues organised the GreenSoul’s 5th Plenary Meeting in DEUSTO premises in Bilbao from 20th to 21st of June 2017. The meeting meeting's main objective was to boost the pilot planning for the 6 pilot buildings that the project have (Seville, Weiz, Pilea, Sussex, Cambridge and Bilbao). Furthermore, the technical attendants agreed in a common picture of the GS's architectures and the first prototypes of GreenSoul-ed Things from CERTH and DEUSTO were presented. The GreenSoul-ed devices complement existing electrical appliances in order to monitor their energy consumption and assist their user’s in better usage – better behaviour from an energy consumption standpoint. Among others, MORElab’s smart power strip, the interactive coaster and the smart dimmer were presented.

Several pending issues were addressed regarding the the integration of the sensors, smart analysers and GreenSoul-ed things into the LinkSmart middleware. DEUSTO and WSC presented the work done to start the installation of the WSC's Smart metering system (UMD). Further discussion on the dissemination of the project and the baseline creation for the different buildings were topics also tackled in the meeting. The roadmap for the November review in Brussels was established.

Eight Quarter Meeting of Welive project in Donostia-San Sebastian

On the 14th, 15th and 16th of March, the Deustotech-Internet team represented by Mikel Emaldi, Unai Aguilera and Diego López-de-Ipiña attended the 8th Quarter Meeting of the WeLIve project in Donostia-San Sebastian. The meeting was held at the University of Deusto and organized by Eurohelp. In addition to discussing technical aspects of the project, the meeting mainly focused on the preparation of the second pilot phase of the project.
