Eduardo Castillejo, new doctor at MORElab

On March 9th, 2015, MORElab's member Eduardo Castillejo has been honored with the PhD recognition. His dissertation, entitled "Dynamic User Interface Adaptation Engine Through Semantic Modelling and Reasoning for Mobile Devices" was advisored by Dr. Diego López de Ipiña and Dr. Aitor Almeida.

Open Data Day 2015

On February 20, MORElab research group and the "Diploma in Data Analysis, Research and Communication" organized the Open Data Day within the University of Deusto in Donostia/San Sebastián. For the third consecutive year, this event has been celebrated in conjunction with the International Open Data Hackathon. The meeting began with the talks by Imanol Argüeso (Open Data Euskadi), Leire Bardají (EuroHelp Consulting), Jorge Campanillas (Iurismática Abogados) and Iñaki Pariente de Prada (Basque Data Protection Authority). After the talks and throughout the day, the participants worked in these three workgroups:

Open Data Hack Day - Bilbao 2014

On February 21, MORElab organised the third edition of the Open Data Day in Bilbao, at Deusto's University.

The event began with three welcoming talks:

Democracy empowered by open data and digestible data, by Braulio Gómez Fortes (Deusto Social Barometer)

The hackathon started with the presentation of the initiatives described at our wiki, to join people on different working groups:

Visualization and publication as Linked Open Data of the Spanish Government's doctoral thesis dissertations database teseo.
Interactive maps showing historical events.
Linked Data tutorial based on Open Data Euskadi.
Basque chapter of DBpedia template mapping
Visualization and homogeneization of Deusto's Social Barometer data.

The results of the hackathon are reviewed in the event's webpage, and the code is available on GitHub.

We hope to repeat the great experience next year.

ForoTech 2013

A week of engineering and technology exhibition was hosted in University of Deusto last month, from 12^th untill 19^th. During the event many innovative prototypes and product samples were presented by the participant companies and research entities. The event was visited by students, professors, entrepreneurs, researchers and by the general public.

The exhibition was stuffed by modern and classical technologies, innovative products and futuristic equipments. An electronic car, a wireless glove, a smart clock and a robotic arm were just a few of the successes of the event. In one small stand there was a 3D printer quietly building a CAD model layer-by-layer, from bottom to up. The passing by visitors were amazed by the simplicity yet effective way of transforming a 3D computer model to a physical object. Todays technological trends are the rapid prototyping machines, the 3D printers, and in the nearest future they can change our world. With these printers in mind the Third Industrial Revolution isnt so far behind.

What kind of new technologies and surprises can bring the second edition of ForoTech in 2014? Well have to wait and see.

"Via Inteligente" Awards

On Wednesday, 7th, March of 2012 Morelab members Aitor Almeida,Pablo Orduña, Eduardo Castillejo and Diego López de Ipiña won an award for the best application in the "PREMIOS VIA INTELIGENTE A LOS SERVICIOS ORIENTADOS A CIUDADANOS" in the "Navegar" category. Assisted City allows users to search nearby interest locations, like bars, restaurants, hotels, gas stations, etc. Thanks to the Imhotep framework, AssistedCity's user interface will be adapted to the user requirements and capabilities. The source code for the application can be downloaded at http://code.google.com/p/imhotep/.

Fifth ACROSS project meeting in Seville

On Wednesday November 30th, MORElab members Pablo Orduña, Diego López de Ipiña and Eduardo Castillejo attended the fifth ACROSS project meeting, in Seville, Andalusia. Being the last meeting of the project, different participants showed the results achieved and future lines of collaboration.

Contribution presented in ROBOT2011, Seville

On Tuesday November 29th, MORElab member Eduardo Castillejo presented the work entitled "Distributed Semantic Middleware for Social Robotic Services" in the ROBOT2011 conference in Seville, Andalusia. The slides are publicly available: slideshare. This paper detailed some of the contributions of MORElab within the ACROSS project.

Project deployment in ALIMERKA in Gijón

On Friday November 25th, MORElab members Pablo Orduña and Eduardo Castillejo deployed part of the system developed within the ACROSS project in a ALIMERKA supermarket located in Gijón, Asturias. This particular module, deployed on the Tico robot -developed by Treelogic and Adele Robots- showed the clients what products were recommended for the user. Additionally, clients could store their shopping list in their mobile devices, and the robot would show them where the desired products are located within the supermarket. The underlying middleware used was otsopack, a semantic distributed solution developed by MORElab.

Participation in ICOST 2011

Members of our research lab presented the paper entitled "Adaptative Applications for Heterogeneous Intelligent Environments" and the poster "BlindShopping: Enabling accessible shopping for visually impaired people through mobile technologies" on the 9th International Conference on Smart Homes and Health Telematics (ICOST), that took place in Montreal, Canada from June 20 to 22, 2011. ACROSS Fourth General Meeting

MoreLab members Aitor Gómez-Goiri, Eduardo Castillejo, Xabier Laiseca, Pablo Orduña and Diego López-de-Ipiña participated in the fourth general meeting of the ACROSS project, held in the Polytechnic School of the University of Extremadura, Caceres (Spain). ACROSS aims to incorporate robotic services into social scenarios allowing them to anticipate to user needs by improving communication and empathy between people and embodied agents.

Imhotep contribution

As part of the PIRAmIDE project, MoreLab members contributed part of the code as Open Source Software. Detailed information about the framework is detailed here.

Imhotep at Personal and Ubiquitous Computing Journal

The paper entitled "Imhotep: an approach to user and device conscious mobile applications" has been published at Personal and Ubiquitous Computing Journal, a Journal with an Impact Factor of 1.554 in 2009. Click here to see more information about paper and here to obtain a copy.

Presenting PIRAmIDE results

MoreLab members Aitor Almeida, Eduardo Castillejo, Pablo Orduña and Diego López-de-Ipiña presented the results achieved in the subproject 3 of the PIRAmIDE project within the workshop "Technology: an opportunity for blind people" organized by ONCE-CIDAT.

A user-centric approach to adaptable mobile interfaces

Part of the work done in the PIRAmIDE project was presented at IWAAL 2010, a Workshop on Ambient Assisted Living held in conjunction with the CEDI 2010. Databar Expanded code contributed to ZXing project

As part of the PIRAmIDE project, MoreLab members Pablo Orduña, Eduardo Castillejo and Aitor Almeida, as well as Treelogic and Servinform staff, contributed the support of Databar Expanded (RSS14 Expanded) to the Open Source ZXing project. This project is an open-source, multi-format 1D/2D barcode image processing library implemented in Java.
