Kick-off of REACH H2020 incubator for data-fuelled solutions, where MORElab leads Incubation Process

MORElab takes part in kick-off of "REACH Incubator: Next Generation Data Incubator to drive growth in the European startup data sphere", on 15th and 16th September 2020.

The REACH project, an initiative born out of the successful efforts of EDI – European Data Incubator, and European Commission’s Horizon 2020, aims to accelerate data-driven innovation in Europe, towards the vision of the Common European Data Space and European Data Market.

REACH will establish an innovation support mechanism and a multi-stakeholder ecosystem that will facilitate the experimentation of secured and trusted data-fuelled solutions which utilize proprietary, often multi-stakeholder, industrial and personal data. REACH will go beyond EDI, not only by connecting data corporations with European innovators, but also by engaging Digital Innovation Hubs in the conception of high potential data value-chains and value-added services.

REACH is an incubation programme, run by 10 core partners and 9 data providers. The highly versatile and experienced consortium will put to use their knowledge, networks and key assets to facilitate the development of 100+ data-driven business ideas. It will create a fertile ground for startups and SMEs to solve real-life challenges of large corporations, by providing the following benefits:

The programme takes startups through 4 intense stages of technical and business growth (EXPLORE, EXPERIMENT, EVOLVE and EXPOSE) over eleven months, and will go through 3 incubation rounds in its three-and-a-half-year project duration. Due to Covid-19, REACH will take all the precautionary safety measures and implement its incubation services online, whenever on-site meeting and trainings are not allowed.

€5 Million Fund for Big Data startups and SMEs – European Data Incubator is open for applications

European Data Incubator (EDI) is a Big Data incubator offering a dedicated acceleration programme and €5M funding for EU based startups and teams.

EDI is looking for Big Data innovators and entrepreneurs from all over Europe to solve real industry challenges provided by various EU corporates and data providers across a wide range of sectors (from Smart Cities, Energy & Environment, to Internet & Media, Industry 4.0 and Retail sectors), or to develop independent data solutions utilizing the available datasets.

EDI’s offer is a great opportunity for entrepreneurs. Selected startups will have access to a free Cloud environment for scalable data processing, data from major European organisations, free business services to boost their growth, a network of data specialists, and up to €100,000 equity free funding.

The EDI incubation process consists of 3 incubation phases: EXPLORE → EXPERIMENT → EVOLVE, where continuous technical, business and funding support is provided to the startups qualifying for the different phases.

Funded by Horizon 2020, EDI is coordinated at European level by the MORElab team at the University of DEUSTO, Spain, and it includes 4 additional core partners (ZABALA Innovation Consulting, F6S Network Ltd, Engineering Ingegneria Informatica and Etventure Startup Hub), as well as 15 data providers (Agencia Efe, Elektro Ljubljana, Emasesa, Energa, Migros, Sonae, Jot Internet Media, RACC, TU-Berlin, Ubimet, Via Verde, Virtual Power Solutions, VRT, Volkswagen Navarra, YKT) offering datasets and defining the business challenges.

Eight Quarter Meeting of Welive project in Donostia-San Sebastian

On the 14th, 15th and 16th of March, the Deustotech-Internet team represented by Mikel Emaldi, Unai Aguilera and Diego López-de-Ipiña attended the 8th Quarter Meeting of the WeLIve project in Donostia-San Sebastian. The meeting was held at the University of Deusto and organized by Eurohelp. In addition to discussing technical aspects of the project, the meeting mainly focused on the preparation of the second pilot phase of the project.

Sixth Quarter Meeting of Welive project in Trento Italy

On the 7th, 8th and 9th of September, the Deustotech-Internet team represented by Mikel Emaldi, Unai Aguilera and Diego López-de-Ipiña attended the 6th Quarter Meeting of the WeLIve project in Trento, Italy. The meeting was held at the Biblioteca Comunale di Trento. In addition to discussing technical aspects of the project, the meeting also focused on the monitoring and execution of the first pilot phase of the project.

Mikel Emaldi, the new MORELab's PhD

On November 13th, 2015, MORElab's member Mikel Emaldi has been honored with the PhD recognition. His dissertation, entitled "Recomendación de conjuntos de datos enlazados basada en minería de grafos" was advisored by Dr. Diego López de Ipiña and Dr. Oscar Corcho.

Attendance to WeLive H2020 project’s 2nd Quaterly Meeting

On 23 and 24^th September, MORElab members Mikel Emaldi and Dr. Diego López-de-Ipiña attended WeLive 2nd Quarterly Meeting (2QM) in Palermo, Italy at Engineering Ingegneria Informatica premises. In such meeting, they presented the progress achieved so far (currently in M8 of the project out 36 months) in the Open Data Layer whose responsibility lies in University of Deusto. They also discussed their planned contributions in the area of WeLive’s Decision Engine, Controller and Core Building Blocks. After the first semester of project execution the full specification of the WeLive framework has been concluded.

Open Data Day 2015

On February 20, MORElab research group and the "Diploma in Data Analysis, Research and Communication" organized the Open Data Day within the University of Deusto in Donostia/San Sebastián. For the third consecutive year, this event has been celebrated in conjunction with the International Open Data Hackathon. The meeting began with the talks by Imanol Argüeso (Open Data Euskadi), Leire Bardají (EuroHelp Consulting), Jorge Campanillas (Iurismática Abogados) and Iñaki Pariente de Prada (Basque Data Protection Authority). After the talks and throughout the day, the participants worked in these three workgroups:

Jacathon Aragón Open Data

Between the 26th and 27th of september, MORElab's researchers Aritz Bilbao and Mikel Emaldi attended the "Jacathon" organized by Aragón Open Data in Jaca. The aim of this hackathon was to develop apps and services based on Aragón's Government Open Data portal and its Social Data API. The app developed by Aritz and Mikel consisted on a service for cleaning noise from Twitter scraper of Aragón Social Data API. The source is available on GitHub.

Teseo's visual analytics website released

After more than one month improving the work developed during the OpenDataDay event organised in Bilbao by our group, we have finally published the visual analyses of teseo, the spanish dabatase of doctoral dissertations maintained by the Ministry of Education.

MORElab started this project some weeks before the OpenDataDay 2014, parsing all the information available on teseo's website, to make it available for the event. On the OpenDataDay, we developed some basic analyses, which have been refined for the release of our teseo's visual analysis website (No longer available).

We encourage you to visit the different visualizations on the website, understanding how each visualization has been generated through the explaination attached to each chart. If you happen to be a data-hacker yourself, the code is available on its GitHub repository for you to improve the project.

Open Data Hack Day - Bilbao 2014

On February 21, MORElab organised the third edition of the Open Data Day in Bilbao, at Deusto's University.

The event began with three welcoming talks:

The hackathon started with the presentation of the initiatives described at our wiki, to join people on different working groups:

Visualization and publication as Linked Open Data of the Spanish Government's doctoral thesis dissertations database teseo.
Interactive maps showing historical events.
Linked Data tutorial based on Open Data Euskadi.
Basque chapter of DBpedia template mapping
Visualization and homogeneization of Deusto's Social Barometer data.

The results of the hackathon are reviewed in the event's webpage, and the code is available on GitHub.

We hope to repeat the great experience next year.

Official maintainer of basque chapter of DBpedia

MORElab group has become the official maintainer of the basque chapter of DBpedia. DBpedia is a semantic dump of Wikipedia which can be queried through SPARQL, easing data mining and information recovery.

We invite you to participate on this project, collaborating on the internationalization of the Basque language.

Placements of MORElab staff at Universiteit Gent and TU Delft

From mid-June until the end of July the PhD candidate Mikel Emaldi is in a placement at the Multimedia Lab of Gent University. During this placement his work is being supervised by Dr. Erik Mannens. He is trying to make progress in the area of Linked Data Graph mining and recommendation. The Multimedia Lab carries out work, among other things, in the area of "Knowledge representation and reasoning": intelligent agents and semantic web services, automatic data enrichment with provenance, linked open data publishing and integration, big (linked) data analytics & visualization, collective social intelligence with trust estimation and read-write web.

Dr. Diego López-de-Ipiña, principal researcher of DeustoTech-INTERNET, is in a placement at TU Delft during July, within the Web Information Systems group in the Software Technology Department. This group, lead by Geert-Jan Houben, bases it research on the engineering and science of the web, specifically on the engineering of web-based information systems with semantics-based user-adaptation.

Visit of Dr. Diego López-de-Ipiña to Multimedia Lab in Universiteit Gent

Dr. Ipiña visited on Friday 12 July, the Multimedia Lab at iMind in Universiteit Gent, where Mikel Emaldi is having a research placement. There, Diego gave a presentation about the work carried out in MORElab. This meeting was an opportunity to share the common interests of MORElab and U.Gent in the area of Linked Data. The Multimedia Lab offered very interesting talks on diverse tools around Linked Data. An area of particular interest for future collaborations between MORElab and Multimedia Lab is provenance-based trust and its application to citizen data provision in order to give place to Smarter Cities composed of urban app ecosystems.

Results Open Data Hack Day 2013

The last February 22, the local event of International Open Data Day has been celebrated at University of Deusto, organized by DeustoTech - Internet. This day, about 30 activists have been working on three projects:

Basque chapter of DBpedia.
Mapping of restaurants from Basque Country to a standard ontology.
A mash-up involving measurements from air quality stations and data from polluting factories.

MORElab paper selected as 2011 one of top-5 articles in Novática

The paper entitled "Middleware semántico orientado a recursos para entornos ubicuos" authored by Aitor Gómez-Goiri, Mikel Emaldi Manrique and Diego López de Ipiña, that was published in the number 209th of Novática journal, has been selected as one of the top-five articles in the 6th edition of Novática awards.

Three PhD students of MORElab attended Semantic Summer School

The members of MORElab Koldo Zabaleta, Pablo Curiel and Mikel Emaldi have attended Summer School on
Ontology Engineering and the Semantic Web'12 at Cercedilla, Madrid. At this Summer School, several leading researchers on Semantic Web have been teaching about Semantic Technologies, ontology engineering and Linked Data.

CICD2012 (Congreso Internacional de Ciudadanía Digital)

Members of MORElab take active part in CICD2012 (Congreso Internacional de Ciudadanía Digital), held at Donostia on 8-9 May 2012. Concretely, Mikel Emaldi worked at the Open Data work group for developers and researchers interested in Linked Data and Diego López-de-Ipiña took part in the round table Experiences on the use of Linked Data

Due to the efforts made offering our data as Linked Data, Morelab is going to be into the next update of the Linking Open Data cloud diagram. Actually, Morelab offers Linked Data about its members and publications. All the information about Morelab's dataset can be found at the Data Hub.

MORElab at International Open Data Day

Morelab's members have been at the International Open Data Hackaton celebrated in Madrid, an event that aimed to structure and publish goverment data as Linked Data. At this event, data about traffic fines and environmental sensors from Biscai was treated. The Hackaton was organizated by Red Linked Data España and was celebrated at El Site.
