Political party and candidate tweets for the campaing period of the 2016 Spanish general election. This dataset contains the political party and candidate tweets for the campaign period (10th to 24th of June) of the 2016 Spanish general election. Pablo Orduña, one of the two winners of the Call to innovation 2016

Call to innovation is the Global Impact Competition for Spain. Winners of GIC are invited to attend the Global Solutions Program (GSP) of the Singularity University free of charge thanks to the regional sponsor (Fundación Rafael del Pino). Pablo Orduña, MORElab researcher, is one of the two awardees presenting LabsLand, the spin-off of the WebLab-Deusto research group, among over 500 candidate projects.

Online Social Networks (OSN) have become a central point of the Internet. Hundreds of millions of users interact daily on the OSNs, producing and consuming large amounts of user generated data.The importance of the OSNs in the political discourse was promptly recognized during the 2008 USA’s presidential campaign, where the usage of the digital communication channels by the democrats was one of the differential characteristics. Since them, OSNs have been recognized as an important channel to reach the target group and as a source of a trove of user generated information.

Social networks present specific problems and issues during the data analysis process. These issues raise both from the demographic distribution of the users of the OSNs, the difference in the online political discourse and the unique technical characteristics of each network. Traditional techniques have to be adapted to tackle these unique issues of the OSNs, like the limited message length, the existence of malicious users or the demographic bias of the population; in order to take advantage of the real-time and large scale data available to be analyzed.

The purpose of this special issue is to collect innovative and high-quality research contributions regarding both the use of OSNs as a channel for the political discourse and campaigns and the usefulness of the user generated data to assess and predict the political context. This special issue aims also to explore applications and case studies that analyze the usage of Online Social Networks in political campaigns.

Specifically, we seek original contributions on the following topics:

Analysis of electoral campaigns on social networks.
Political opinion mining on social networks.
Prediction of electoral results using social network data.
SNA techniques for the analysis of the political activity in social networks.
Influence measurement on social networks.
Sockpuppets and online astroturfing on political campaigns.
Issues on using social data for the political discourse analysis.
Applications and case-studies.

Submission

Author should submit their papers via e-mail to: aitor.almeida@deusto.es and pablo.orduna@deusto.es. The subject of the e-mail should be: [JUCS – Political Social Networks]. Submissions will be reviewed by at least 3 reviewers following a double-blind review process.

All submissions must be written in English and follow the JUCS’s special issues guidelines: http://www.jucs.org/ujs/jucs/info/submissions/style_guide.html. The length of the manuscript may not exceed 20 pages.

Halmstad Workshop on Intelligent Environments Supporting Health and Wellbeing

MORElab researchers Gorka Azkune and Pablo Orduña participated on the Halmstad Workshop on Intelligent Environments Supporting Health and Wellbeing in Halmstad University (Sweden) on November 4th, 2015. Researchers from 8 universities participated. The focus of the workshop was on potential collaborations on configuring test bed resources to allow annotated data to be generated in different sites, shared through one common format to facilitate research and collaborations across research groups.

Approval of SIMPATICO H2020 project

On Wednesday, 28^th October, DeustoTech-INTERNET was notified the approval of its 3^rd H2020 project in the topic “EURO6 – 2015: Meeting new societal needs by using emerging technologies in the public sector”. The project title is “SIMPATICO: SIMplifying the interaction with Public Administration Through Information technology for Citizens and cOmpanies”. It is a 36-month project that will address the need to offer a more efficient and more effective experience to companies and citizens in their daily interaction with Public Administration (PA) by providing a personalized delivery of e- services based on advanced cognitive system technologies and by promoting an active engagement of people for the continuous improvement of the interaction with these services. It will combine the research fields of Human Computation, Service Personalization and Adaptation and Interactive Augmented Contents.

In this project, UDEUSTO will contribute with the creation of the Citizenpedia component which will create a user-created knowledge base about public data services, processes and regulations. UDEUSTO will lead WP4. Human computation. In this project proposal, Dr. Diego López-de-Ipiña and Dr. Pablo Orduña intervened. The total granted money to UDEUSTO is 516.719€.

labman_ud beta version released

Today, MORElab is releasing a beta version of labman_ud, a web application which allows a research group manage and publish all its data. MORElab's own website is powered by labman_ud, so you can try all the features on a living example.

The code is hosted and made public in Github under a GNU GPLv3 license, and we will try to fix any error before the official v1.0 release, which we hope could be soon enough.

If you are interested in the project, feel free to fork the repository, contact us at any moment or leave us your impressions.

We will continue to improve this tool in our spare time to create a great tool for data management in your unit.

Best PhD and Best End-term project awards for MORElab members

The Spanish Chapter of the IEEE Education Society (CESEI) has awarded MORElab members Luis Rodriguez-Gil and Pablo Orduña with the Best End-term project award and Best PhD dissertation award in its 8th edition. The awards will be given during the TAEE 2014 conference in June.

MORElab's members will lead two workshops within the e-ghost summer courses

MORElab's members will organize two courses within the 2014 e-ghost series. The courses, which are hosted by the University of Deusto, are free and open to everyone who is interested in new open hardware/software technologies and science tendencies.

Teseo's visual analytics website released

After more than one month improving the work developed during the OpenDataDay event organised in Bilbao by our group, we have finally published the visual analyses of teseo, the spanish dabatase of doctoral dissertations maintained by the Ministry of Education.

MORElab started this project some weeks before the OpenDataDay 2014, parsing all the information available on teseo's website, to make it available for the event. On the OpenDataDay, we developed some basic analyses, which have been refined for the release of our teseo's visual analysis website (No longer available).

We encourage you to visit the different visualizations on the website, understanding how each visualization has been generated through the explaination attached to each chart. If you happen to be a data-hacker yourself, the code is available on its GitHub repository for you to improve the project.

Open Data Hack Day - Bilbao 2014

On February 21, MORElab organised the third edition of the Open Data Day in Bilbao, at Deusto's University.

Basque chapter of DBpedia template mapping
Visualization and homogeneization of Deusto's Social Barometer data.

The results of the hackathon are reviewed in the event's webpage, and the code is available on GitHub.

PhD graduation of MORElab members

MORElab members Pablo Orduña, Unai Aguilera and Aitor Almeida received their degree in the PhD graduation this Tuesday. Unai and Aitor received their degree from Diego López de Ipiña and Pablo from Javier García Zubia.

eMadrid Seminar on "Big Data in Education"

On January 17th, MORElab member Pablo Orduña has presented the work done in LA WebLab by Pablo Orduña and Aitor Almeida, in a talk entitled "Analyzing the use of remote laboratories. PhD lecture in National University of Rosario

MORElab member Pablo Orduña was invited to lecture a Postgraduate Doctorate Course module titled "Educative remote laboratories. Management systems, federation, interoperability protocols and scheduling systems" (Laboratorios remotos educativos. Sistemas de gestión, federación, protocolos de interoperabilidad y sistemas de planificación) in the National University of Rosario, in Rosario, Argentina, during the last week of September.

The table of contents is available in spanish in their university. Collaboration with the FCEIA (Facultad de Ciencias Exactas, Ingeniería y Agrimensura) had taken place in the past, having built joint interoperability bridges.

First SNOLA presential meeting

MORElab members Pablo Orduña and Aitor Almeida attended the first Spanish Network of Learning Analytics (SNOLA) presential meeting, which was held in the Universidad Complutense de Madird. The focus of the group is to create a network of researchers and developers interested on the field of Learning Analytics at Spanish level, creating synergies and promoting related initiatives.

Pablo Orduña, the new doctor of MORElab

On May 31st, 2013, MORElab member Pablo Orduña has been honored with the PhD. grade. It was entitled "Transitive and Scalable Federation Model for Remote Laboratories", and supervised by Javier García-Zubia. Below, in a photograph taken after the viva appear the jury panel, the candidate and his supervisor in the following order: jury panel was compounded by: Javier García-Zubia (supervisor), Manuel Castro (UNED), Judson Harward (Harvard University), Pablo Orduña, Carlos Delgado Kloos (UC3M), Luis Bellido (UPM), and Diego López-de-Ipiña (University of Deusto).

Go-Lab kickoff meeting

MORElab members Diego López-de-Ipiña and Pablo Orduña, as well as DeustoTech Learning members Javier García Zubia and Olga Dziabenko attended the FP7 Go-Lab project kick-off meeting on late November in Enschede, Netherlands. The project, which involves 19 partners among 4 years, aims to provide students an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in science by conducting experiments using modern laboratory equipment by themselves, deepen their knowledge in fundamental sciences, and to motivate them for making scientific carrier in the future.

Pablo Orduña has been Honored with the TR35 Spain Award

MORElab member Pablo Orduña has been honored with the TR35 Spain award. The MIT Technology Review selects the top 10 young innovators in Spain through its spanish edition, seeking fascinating and inspiring works that may change the business and technology landscape in the near future. Pablo Orduña was awarded for his contribution on scaling up the federation of remote laboratories through WebLab-Deusto and the impact this brings to STEM education. As part of the award, Pablo participated at the EmTech conference in Boston, and will participate in the EmTech Spain conference in Málaga in November. Back in June, Pablo was also invited as a speaker in the Singularity University in Mountain View, California for this same topic.

Pablo Orduña presented WebLab-Deusto at Singularity University

MORElab member Pablo Orduña presented on June 26th the WebLab-Deusto project within the Global Grand Challenges week of the Singularity University (Mountain View, California). The Singularity University, located in the NASA Ames research center at Silicon Valley, was founded in 2008 by NASA, Google, Nokia, Autodesk and LinkedIn among other companies. Every year it offers a 10-week interdisciplinary program for top students and entrepreneurial leaders (80 selected from over a thousand) worldwide (36 countries in this edition), aimed at solving some of our most pressing global challenges.!

"Via Inteligente" Awards

On Wednesday, 7th, March of 2012 Morelab members Aitor Almeida,Pablo Orduña, Eduardo Castillejo and Diego López de Ipiña won an award for the best application in the "PREMIOS VIA INTELIGENTE A LOS SERVICIOS ORIENTADOS A CIUDADANOS" in the "Navegar" category. Assisted City allows users to search nearby interest locations, like bars, restaurants, hotels, gas stations, etc. Thanks to the Imhotep framework, AssistedCity's user interface will be adapted to the user requirements and capabilities. The source code for the application can be downloaded at http://code.google.com/p/imhotep/.

Presentation of mIO & ACROSS finished projects results

Cloud Computing Workshop

On Wednesday December 7th the Cloud Computing Workshop was held in the University of Deusto. Steven Woodward, CEO of Woodward Systems, gave a brief overview of the view of the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the International Telecommunication Union about cloud computing. Igor Ruiz-Agundez, researcher at the Computing Unit of DeustoTech, gave a presentation of a flexible accounting model that allows the deployment of cloud computing services to accomplish all the service providers requirements. MORElab members Alex Rayón and Pablo Orduña also participated, explaining the model of economy of services developed in the Smart Work project and the present and future of the mCloud project, respectively.

Fifth ACROSS project meeting in Seville

On Wednesday November 30th, MORElab members Pablo Orduña, Diego López de Ipiña and Eduardo Castillejo attended the fifth ACROSS project meeting, in Seville, Andalusia. Being the last meeting of the project, different participants showed the results achieved and future lines of collaboration.

Project deployment in ALIMERKA in Gijón

On Friday November 25th, MORElab members Pablo Orduña and Eduardo Castillejo deployed part of the system developed within the ACROSS project in a ALIMERKA supermarket located in Gijón, Asturias. This particular module, deployed on the Tico robot -developed by Treelogic and Adele Robots- showed the clients what products were recommended for the user. Additionally, clients could store their shopping list in their mobile devices, and the robot would show them where the desired products are located within the supermarket. The underlying middleware used was otsopack, a semantic distributed solution developed by MORElab.

Project deployment in ABAT hospital in Vilanova i la Geltrú

On Wednesday November 23rd, MORElab member Pablo Orduña deployed part of the system developed within the ACROSS project in the Hospital Comarcal Sant Antoni Abat, in Vilanova i la Geltrú, Catalonia. This particular module, deployed on the Roinbot robot, developed by m-bot solutions, evaluates the memory of the patient, providing therapists with a panel to see historical data in order to create statistics. The underlying middleware used was otsopack, a semantic distributed solution developed by MORElab.

INNPACTO 2011

DeustoTech-INTERNET has obtained three new research grants under the INNPACTO 2011 research call promoted by the Spanish Ministry of Innovation and Science. The three projects funded are: ADAPTA. Adecuación, validación e integración de datos abiertos por gobiernos y empresas IPT-2011-0949-430000 (led by TREELOGIC), Migración Avanzada hacia el Cloud mCLOUD IPT-2011-1558-430000 (led by Informática Gesfor) and Social Awareness Based Emergency Situation Solver SABESS IPT-2011-1052-390000 (led by TREELOGIC).

Participation in ICOST 2011

Members of our research lab presented the paper entitled "Adaptative Applications for Heterogeneous Intelligent Environments" and the poster "BlindShopping: Enabling accessible shopping for visually impaired people through mobile technologies" on the 9th International Conference on Smart Homes and Health Telematics (ICOST), that took place in Montreal, Canada from June 20 to 22, 2011. ACROSS Fourth General Meeting

MoreLab members Aitor Gómez-Goiri, Eduardo Castillejo, Xabier Laiseca, Pablo Orduña and Diego López-de-Ipiña participated in the fourth general meeting of the ACROSS project, held in the Polytechnic School of the University of Extremadura, Caceres (Spain). ACROSS aims to incorporate robotic services into social scenarios allowing them to anticipate to user needs by improving communication and empathy between people and embodied agents.

As part of the PIRAmIDE project, MoreLab members contributed part of the code as Open Source Software. Detailed information about the framework is detailed here.
