€5 Million Fund for Big Data startups and SMEs – European Data Incubator is open for applications

European Data Incubator (EDI) is a Big Data incubator offering a dedicated acceleration programme and €5M funding for EU based startups and teams.

EDI is looking for Big Data innovators and entrepreneurs from all over Europe to solve real industry challenges provided by various EU corporates and data providers across a wide range of sectors (from Smart Cities, Energy & Environment, to Internet & Media, Industry 4.0 and Retail sectors), or to develop independent data solutions utilizing the available datasets.

EDI’s offer is a great opportunity for entrepreneurs. Selected startups will have access to a free Cloud environment for scalable data processing, data from major European organisations, free business services to boost their growth, a network of data specialists, and up to €100,000 equity free funding.

The EDI incubation process consists of 3 incubation phases: EXPLORE → EXPERIMENT → EVOLVE, where continuous technical, business and funding support is provided to the startups qualifying for the different phases.

Funded by Horizon 2020, EDI is coordinated at European level by the MORElab team at the University of DEUSTO, Spain, and it includes 4 additional core partners (ZABALA Innovation Consulting, F6S Network Ltd, Engineering Ingegneria Informatica and Etventure Startup Hub), as well as 15 data providers (Agencia Efe, Elektro Ljubljana, Emasesa, Energa, Migros, Sonae, Jot Internet Media, RACC, TU-Berlin, Ubimet, Via Verde, Virtual Power Solutions, VRT, Volkswagen Navarra, YKT) offering datasets and defining the business challenges.

Eight Quarter Meeting of Welive project in Donostia-San Sebastian

On the 14th, 15th and 16th of March, the Deustotech-Internet team represented by Mikel Emaldi, Unai Aguilera and Diego López-de-Ipiña attended the 8th Quarter Meeting of the WeLIve project in Donostia-San Sebastian. The meeting was held at the University of Deusto and organized by Eurohelp. In addition to discussing technical aspects of the project, the meeting mainly focused on the preparation of the second pilot phase of the project.

Oscar Peña, the new MORELab's PhD

On January 26th, 2017, MORElab's member Oscar Peña has been honored with the PhD recognition. His dissertation, entitled " A Data-Driven Visual Approach to Explore Linked Open Data Environments" was advisored by Dr. Diego López de Ipiña and Dr. Unai Aguilera.

Sixth Quarter Meeting of Welive project in Trento Italy

On the 7th, 8th and 9th of September, the Deustotech-Internet team represented by Mikel Emaldi, Unai Aguilera and Diego López-de-Ipiña attended the 6th Quarter Meeting of the WeLIve project in Trento, Italy. The meeting was held at the Biblioteca Comunale di Trento. In addition to discussing technical aspects of the project, the meeting also focused on the monitoring and execution of the first pilot phase of the project.

9th Quaterly Meeting for IES Cities project in San Sebastian, Donostia

On 30th September and 1st October, the DeustoTech-Internet team represented by Dr. Unai Aguilera and Dr.Diego López-de-Ipiña attended to the 9th quarterly meeting of the IES Cities project in San Sebastián-Donostia, SPAIN. The meeting was organized in the campus of the University of Deusto in San Sebastián. The project is in M31 out of M36. The discussions focused on the preparation and execution of the 2nd phase of the trials of the project. 16 urban apps are currently available at https://play.google.com/store/search?q=IESCities&c... and are being trialled in the 4 cities involved in the project, namely Bristol, Majadahonda, Rovereto and Zaragoza.

Oscar Peña presented his research advances in MTSR'15

MORElab's member Oscar Peña presented two articles on the Metadata and Semantics Research Conference 2015 (MTSR), which was held in Manchester's Metropolitan University from the 9th to the 11th of September. Both his slides are available in the following links:

The focus on coherent visualization for the Semantic Web awekened the interest of some participants of the conference, opening some great discussions about future research paths in this area.

MORElab members help to organize a Hackathon in Zaragoza within the context of IES Cities Project (March, 20-22th)

El próximo fin de semana 20, 21 y 22 de marzo, Etopia Centro de Arte y Tecnología en Zaragoza acoge la Hackathonpara desarrollar las Apps de Zaragoza (más detalles en http://z4s.es y http://opencitydata.es/web/guest/news). El objetivo de la Hackathon es crear por grupos de hasta 5 personas aplicaciones web o móviles vinculadas a los datos abiertos del Ayuntamiento de Zaragoza y a la plataforma IES Cities Zaragoza. Todas las aplicaciones deben desarrollarse durante el evento, para lo que los equipos contarán con la asesoría técnica de mentores de la Web Municipal y la Universidad de Deusto.

Desde la Universidad de Deusto, Dr. Unai Aguilera y Dr. Diego López-de-Ipiña actuarán como mentores en el evento porque los participantes podrán usar la plataforma IES Cities, creada para acelerar el desarrollo de aplicaciones móviles basadas en Open Data, resultado del proyecto europeo http://iescities.eu en el que colaboran el Ayuntamiento de Zaragoza y la Universidad de Deusto y disponible en http://iescities.com. La API pública que ofrece la plataforma IES Cities puede revisarse en http://iescities.com/IESCities/swagger/. En este proyecto europeo participan otras tres ciudades europeas: Bristol, Majadahonda, y Rovereto. Open Data Day 2015

On February 20, MORElab research group and the "Diploma in Data Analysis, Research and Communication" organized the Open Data Day within the University of Deusto in Donostia/San Sebastián. For the third consecutive year, this event has been celebrated in conjunction with the International Open Data Hackathon. The meeting began with the talks by Imanol Argüeso (Open Data Euskadi), Leire Bardají (EuroHelp Consulting), Jorge Campanillas (Iurismática Abogados) and Iñaki Pariente de Prada (Basque Data Protection Authority). After the talks and throughout the day, the participants worked in these three workgroups:

Attendance to IES Cities' FQM at Bristol

On 24 and 25 September 2014, MORElab researchers Dr. Unai Aguilera and Dr. Diego López-de-Ipiña attended in Majadahonda to the IES Cities project’s Fifth Quarter Meeting. This productive work meeting enabled the partners of the project to agree on several aspects regarding the IES Cities platform trials that will be carried out during the following months.

labman_ud beta version released

Today, MORElab is releasing a beta version of labman_ud, a web application which allows a research group manage and publish all its data. MORElab's own website is powered by labman_ud, so you can try all the features on a living example.

The code is hosted and made public in Github under a GNU GPLv3 license, and we will try to fix any error before the official v1.0 release, which we hope could be soon enough.

We will continue to improve this tool in our spare time to create a great tool for data management in your unit.

MORElab hosts the IES Cities Project Fourth Quarter Meeting (4QM) & First Project Review Meeting

From 6 to 8 May 2014, the IES Cities project’s Fourth Quarter Meeting (4QM) & First Project Review Meeting was held at the premises of the Faculty of Engineering in the University of Deusto, Billbao. Such meeting has been key to present the first release of IES Cities integrated platform and RESTful back-end and 8 new urban apps, two apps belonging to each of the 4 participating councils in the consortium, namely, Bristol, Zaragoza, Rovereto and Majadahonda. An additional app, namely IES Cities Player, developed by MORElab research group belonging to DeustoTech-INTERNET unit within DeustoTech-Deusto Institute of Technology, was also presented. Such application acts as a broker and catalyst of the urban services enabled by the IES Cities platform allowing end-users (citizens) to find, download and execute those services.

On 8 May 2014, the project was presented to the European Commission, being the outcome very positive. The IES Cities Consortium, composed by TECNALIA, Universidad de Deusto, Zaragoza, TOSHIBA, KWMC, Bristol Council, FBK, Rovereto, Majadahonda, Geko, EuroHelp, AMIS and ZIB, will keep working hard to make sure that the project keeps progressing strongly according the work plan. Next month, i.e. June 2014, the first phase of the developed services’ pilot in the 4 mentioned European cities will start.

Teseo's visual analytics website released

After more than one month improving the work developed during the OpenDataDay event organised in Bilbao by our group, we have finally published the visual analyses of teseo, the spanish dabatase of doctoral dissertations maintained by the Ministry of Education.

MORElab started this project some weeks before the OpenDataDay 2014, parsing all the information available on teseo's website, to make it available for the event. On the OpenDataDay, we developed some basic analyses, which have been refined for the release of our teseo's visual analysis website (No longer available).

We encourage you to visit the different visualizations on the website, understanding how each visualization has been generated through the explaination attached to each chart. If you happen to be a data-hacker yourself, the code is available on its GitHub repository for you to improve the project.

Open Data Hack Day - Bilbao 2014

On February 21, MORElab organised the third edition of the Open Data Day in Bilbao, at Deusto's University.

The event began with three welcoming talks:

The hackathon started with the presentation of the initiatives described at our wiki, to join people on different working groups:

Visualization and publication as Linked Open Data of the Spanish Government's doctoral thesis dissertations database teseo.
Interactive maps showing historical events.
Linked Data tutorial based on Open Data Euskadi.
Basque chapter of DBpedia template mapping
Visualization and homogeneization of Deusto's Social Barometer data.

The results of the hackathon are reviewed in the event's webpage, and the code is available on GitHub.

We hope to repeat the great experience next year.

PhD graduation of MORElab members

MORElab members Pablo Orduña, Unai Aguilera and Aitor Almeida received their degree in the PhD graduation this Tuesday. Unai and Aitor received their degree from Diego López de Ipiña and Pablo from Javier García Zubia.

Last May, 3rd of 2013 MORElab member Unai Aguilera has been honored with the PhD. grade. His dissertation entitled "Nuevos protocolos para el descubrimiento y la composición automática de servicios en redes móviles ad hoc" was supervised by Dr. López-de-Ipiña. ForoTech 2013

A week of engineering and technology exhibition was hosted in University of Deusto last month, from 12^th untill 19^th. During the event many innovative prototypes and product samples were presented by the participant companies and research entities. The event was visited by students, professors, entrepreneurs, researchers and by the general public.

The exhibition was stuffed by modern and classical technologies, innovative products and futuristic equipments. An electronic car, a wireless glove, a smart clock and a robotic arm were just a few of the successes of the event. In one small stand there was a 3D printer quietly building a CAD model layer-by-layer, from bottom to up. The passing by visitors were amazed by the simplicity yet effective way of transforming a 3D computer model to a physical object. Todays technological trends are the rapid prototyping machines, the 3D printers, and in the nearest future they can change our world. With these printers in mind the Third Industrial Revolution isnt so far behind.

What kind of new technologies and surprises can bring the second edition of ForoTech in 2014? Well have to wait and see.

Results Open Data Hack Day 2013

The last February 22, the local event of International Open Data Day has been celebrated at University of Deusto, organized by DeustoTech - Internet. This day, about 30 activists have been working on three projects:

Basque chapter of DBpedia.
Mapping of restaurants from Basque Country to a standard ontology.
A mash-up involving measurements from air quality stations and data from polluting factories.

MORElab at ADHOC-NOW 2012

Unai Aguilera presented the paper entitled "A Parameter-Based service discovery protocol for mobile Ad-Hoc networks, at ADHOC-NOW 2012, 11th. International Conference. This works presents a new approach for service information dissemination and search using a taxonomy of concepts.

MORElab gets into the LOD Cloud

Due to the efforts made offering our data as Linked Data, Morelab is going to be into the next update of the Linking Open Data cloud diagram. Actually, Morelab offers Linked Data about its members and publications. All the information about Morelab's dataset can be found at the Data Hub.

THOFU Project Meeting

MoreLab members Aitor Almeida, Unai Aguilera and Diego López-de-Ipiña participated in the general meeting of the THOFU project, held in the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Madrid (Spain). THOFU aims to research the technologies that will make the hotel of the future possible.

INNPACTO 2011

DeustoTech-INTERNET has obtained three new research grants under the INNPACTO 2011 research call promoted by the Spanish Ministry of Innovation and Science. The three projects funded are: ADAPTA. Adecuación, validación e integración de datos abiertos por gobiernos y empresas IPT-2011-0949-430000 (led by TREELOGIC), Migración Avanzada hacia el Cloud mCLOUD IPT-2011-1558-430000 (led by Informática Gesfor) and Social Awareness Based Emergency Situation Solver SABESS IPT-2011-1052-390000 (led by TREELOGIC).

Identifying Security Issues in the Semantic Web: Injection attacks in the Semantic Query Languages

The work "Identifying Security Issues in the Semantic Web: Injection attacks in the Semantic Query Languages" was presented at JSWEB2010, a workshop on Web Services and SOA held in conjunction with the CEDI 2010. TALISMAN+ENGINE granted

The project "TALISMAN+ENGINE: Cooperative and Semantic Hybrid Reasoning for Service Orchestration in Reactive Environments" has been granted funding from the Ministry of Science and Innovation (MICINN), for the period 2010-12, under the Spanish R&D&I Plan for 2008-2011, Sub-program of Basic Research Projects (TIN2010-20510-C04-03). TALIS+ENGINE is in fact a subproject of the coordinated project entitled "TALISMAN+: Intelligent system for follow-up and promotion of personal autonomy" led by UPM and in which UCLM and Univ.Alicante also take part apart from University of Deusto.

RIA course, July 9th to 13th

From July 9th to 13th, Unai Aguilera and Pablo Orduña, members of MoreLab, and María Legorburu, member of Emergiatech, gave the course "Rich Internet Application Development with OpenLaszlo and Google Web Toolkit", within the summer courses organised by the open source technologies interest group (e-ghost) of the Faculty of Engineering (ESIDE) of the University of Deusto.

ZAINGUNE project started

The ZAINGUNE project aims to design and implement the infrastructure and tools required to ease the design, programming and deployment of assistive caring environments populated by intelligent services.

The project is funded by the Basque Government - INTEK Program and the consortium is formed by Tecnologico Fundacion Deusto, TECDOA, Irontec and Visesa

SmartLab project started

The project "SmartLab: Intelligent, Collaborative and Programmable Working Environment" has started after being funded by the Saiotek 2006 program of the Basque Government.

The goal of SmartLab is to demonstrate the benefits of applying Ambient Intelligence principles for improving the experiences of people in their working environments.
